Low
Vision
Having Low vision means that you can't see well
and that a regular glasses probably won't help you see much
better.
For
Reading and Writing:
You may be able to use special magnifiers or magnifying glasses
to make the image large enough to see. If you can read this
text, you may be helped by low vision devices. Using magnifiers
and magnifying glasses takes practice. There are also special
TV-like monitors that can enlarge the image, but these devices
are very expensive.
In
order to get these special glasses or devices you should contact
your eye-care specialist. There are also doctors who have special
training in low vision rehabilitation.
For
Getting Around:
Telescopes
can be used to look into the distance. These devices can minimize
the central blind spot associated with macular degeneration.
Though it may be legal (in some states) to drive a car with
telescopic vision, it can be very dangerous. We do not recommend
it.
Other
Devices:
A
number of other devices are available to low vision patients.
Talking watches will tell time, and talking computers have been
developed. Take a look in our store or visit a Lighthouse near
you!!
