The AMDRT Study

For "Wet" Macular Degeneration

Dear Colleague:

This is to update you on the status of a clinical trial for radiation therapy for age-related macular degeneration. The National Eye Institute, through the National Institutes of Health, has awarded a grant to fund a pilot study evaluating the role of external beam radiation therapy in age-related macular degeneration. The grant is being administered through the University of Pennsylvania, Scheie Eye Institute. Approximately 13 centers from around the country are participating.

The New York AMDRT Center is an approved site which can enroll patients immediately. Eligible patients are those with a diagnosis of the "wet type" of age-related macular degeneration.

There are 2 AMDRT Studies:

New Subfoveal CNV Study: This includes patients with angiographic evidence of subfoveal CNV that is not amenable to laser treatment or to photodynamic therapy according to published guidelines from clinical trials.

Recurrent CNV Study: This includes patients who have been treated with laser, but show evidence of persistent or recurrent CNV on fluorescein angiography and who are not eligible for laser treatment or photodynamic therapy according to published guidelines from clinical trials.

Patients who are eligible for either study after providing informed consent, will be randomized to receiving external beam radiation therapy versus no radiation.
